CELEBRATING THE MINISTRY OF LAY PEOPLE
Often when we think about church and leadership we think immediately of clergy of various descriptions. But what about head teachers, office managers, newspaper editors, financial controllers, magistrates, farm managers, school governors, youth football coaches, scout leaders and chief executives?
The 2019 Germinate Lecture took place on Wednesday 15 May and was delivered by George Dunn, CEO of the Tenant Farmers Association (TFA) and part of the leadership team of his local, Reading-based, Elim Pentecostal church.
Exercising Christian leadership in a secular context requires wisdom, sensitivity and strength. How can our rural churches find ways to nurture, support, protect and grow the leaders in our communities? And what might those leaders have to offer to our churches?

Germinate Lecture 2018: Examining the ground under our feet
The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek moved from ministry in the urban Diocese of London to become Bishop of Gloucester in a predominantly rural diocese. In her lecture she will help us explore the soil of our landscape, including some of the stones and thistles, as we seek to be fruitful in being the Church in traditional and new ways in rural areas.
Bishop Rachel encouraged us to recognise the ways in which rural churches are heralding the Kingdom of God, acknowledging who we are and where we’ve come from and learning to spot the Holy Spirit at work in our communities.

Germinate Lecture 2017: Where you stand is how you lead
Canon Anne Tomlinson, Principal of the Scottish Episcopal Institute, works within a team forming candidates for ordination and Lay Readership in the Scottish Episcopal Church. She has been a Deacon for 23 years and is passionate about equipping leaders for the task of collaborative mission.
Anne spoke about the model of leadership offered by diaconal ministry and encourage those in Christian leadership to view their call as a ministry of service.
