1. Environment: Caring for Creation
Bible Commentary:
From the very beginning, the Bible highlights our role as stewards of creation. In Genesis 1:28, God commands humanity to “fill the earth and subdue it,” which is often misunderstood as a licence for exploitation. However, Genesis 2:15 clarifies that we are called to “tend and keep” the garden, meaning our role is to nurture and protect the earth. The Bible is rich in imagery of creation, reminding us that the earth is the Lord’s (Psalm 24:1) and that all of creation testifies to God’s goodness (Romans 1:20). Our food systems have a profound impact on the environment, so we must make choices that reflect our faith in God as Creator and Sustainer.
Discussion Questions:
- What does it mean to “tend and keep” the earth today in light of modern food systems?
- How do we reconcile the convenience of global food production with the environmental cost?
- In what ways can your church or community reduce its environmental impact, particularly in terms of food consumption?
Event Suggestions:
For an event focused on this theme, you could host an Eco-friendly bring & share meal, where participants are encouraged to bring locally-sourced, plant-based dishes. During the meal, you can introduce the theme by reading Genesis 2:15 and Psalm 24:1, followed by a discussion on how food choices impact the environment. Consider inviting a local farmer or environmental advocate to speak about sustainable farming practices. Encourage the group to discuss tangible ways they can reduce food waste, support local farmers, or minimise their carbon footprint.
Activity Ideas:
- Set up a Food Recording table, where you can begin to track the environmental impact of food choices.
- Develop and share resources for starting a community garden or supporting local farmers.
