Celebrating Pilgrimage

Why Pilgrimage?

Pilgrimage is enjoying a resurgence, with people from all walks of life seeking space to reflect, reconnect with the land, and encounter God. Whether it’s a few quiet steps through the local countryside or a well-planned journey between churches, pilgrimage can offer stillness, insight, and transformation.

Pilgrimage and the Rural Church

Rural churches are ideally placed to welcome and accompany pilgrims. With beautiful landscapes, sacred spaces, and a tradition of hospitality, we can offer places of welcome and wonder. Pilgrimage invites us to share our stories of faith, place, and community in new and creative ways.

Inclusive and Accessible

A pilgrimage doesn’t have to be long or arduous. It can be done on foot, by bike, on public transport – even virtually. It can be solitary or shared, contemplative or celebratory. It’s open to all ages and abilities. Whether you are a seasoned walker or someone seeking meaning from your armchair, the invitation is the same: to be open to the journey, to God, and to one another.

Pilgrimage as Mission

Rooted in centuries of Christian tradition, pilgrimage is now also a powerful way of connecting with those outside the church. It offers a gentle and non-threatening way to explore spiritual questions, honour the sacredness of the land, and rediscover ancient rhythms of life and prayer.

Real Stories, Local Routes

The new ARC Pilgrimage 2025 resource is full of ideas, examples, and reflections from across the UK – from ecumenical prayer walks to virtual pilgrimages, from children’s trails to creative hospitality projects. You’ll find inspiration to start something small in your community and allow it to grow.

Journeying in the Bible

The theme of journey runs deeply through the Bible — from Abraham’s call to set out in faith, to the Exodus through the wilderness, to Jesus walking the dusty roads of Galilee. Pilgrimage is not just about movement, but about transformation through the journey.

“Stand at the crossroads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way lies; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.”

Jeremiah 6:16

“Therefore walk in the way of the good,
and keep to the paths of the just.”

Proverbs 2:20

Whether you journey a long distance or take just a few mindful steps, Scripture reminds us that God meets us on the way — often in surprising places and quiet moments.

A Pilgrim’s Prayer

Give me a quiet heart,
a steady step,
a walking staff of faith.
Clothe me with hope,
fill my pack with joy,
and guide my feet to places of peace.
May my eyes stay open to beauty,
my ears attentive to your whisper,
and my heart ready to be changed.
And so, O Lord,
I take this pilgrimage.

Amen.
