Celebrating Harvest

Why Harvest?

Harvest remains one of the most recognisable and widely celebrated moments in the rural year. Rooted in gratitude and community, it invites us to pause — to give thanks for the land and those who tend it, and to share abundance with others. Whether simple or elaborate, Harvest offers a natural opportunity to connect faith, food, and the wider community.

Harvest and the Rural Church
Rural churches are woven into the rhythms of land and season. With deep ties to farming, growing, and gathering, we are well placed to honour the story of Harvest. These celebrations can build bridges between generations, reconnect congregations with local producers, and offer hospitality to those on the edges.

Inclusive and Adaptable
Harvest can be marked in countless ways — with a traditional service, an outdoor gathering, a community supper, or a shared creative project. It works in small chapels and large benefices, schools and village halls. Whether rooted in ancient tradition or shaped for new realities, Harvest is a time when everyone can join in.

Harvest as Mission
Harvest gives churches a gentle, joyful reason to reach out. It invites conversation about food justice, climate, community, and care for creation. It opens the door to welcome new people, honour local stories, and share God’s abundance with all.

Real Stories, Fresh Ideas
The new ARC Harvest 2025 resource is full of reflections, examples, and ideas from across the UK — from vineyard services to community fridges, from school partnerships to woolly sunflowers. You’ll find inspiration to start small and grow something beautiful in your place.

Harvest in the Bible
The theme of harvest weaves throughout Scripture — from God’s provision in the wilderness to Jesus’ parables of seeds, sowing, and abundance. Harvest is never just about crops; it’s about trust, justice, generosity, and shared joy.

“You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you.”
— Deuteronomy 8:10

“The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us.”
— Psalm 67:6

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’”
— Matthew 9:37–38

Harvest invites us to pause — to give thanks, to share what we have, and to notice the hand of God in the ordinary and the everyday.

A Harvest Prayer

Lord of the soil and the seasons,
We thank you for the gifts of the earth,
for fields and farmers, fruit and fullness.

Bless those who labour in love,
who tend animals, sow seed, and gather in hope.
May their work be honoured,
and their burdens lightened.

Make us generous in sharing,
grateful in receiving,
and mindful of those with little.

In all things, may we remember:
every harvest begins with trust,
and every gift is yours.
Amen.
